Eggs Benedict with salmon for breakfast or Beef medallions for dinner at the Peppermill in Devizes - the best in Wiltshire! I am usually rather wary of going to pubs or restaurants in old towns and villages in Wiltshire, a county famous for its rolling hills and many beautiful but very old towns and villages. Old buildings in hilly regions of the country can be daunting. But I have been reasonably pleased with access in Devizes, a Town in the Center of Wiltshire which has proportionately more Grade II listed buildings which all too often mean stepped access. Back alley entrances are available to many pubs and restaurants in the old market square. But I was able to use the step-free entrance into the Peppermill. A few of their tables at the back of the restaurant are down a flight of stairs. On the main floor, there are plenty of tables as well as the bar, and plenty of room to manoeuvre between tables. I find their tables with centre legs irritating as the leg impeded my chair but the restaurant is happy to reserve their largest table which is easily accessible even if we are only booking for two. But you must book - it’s a very popular restaurant. And the disabled lavatory was well designed and spacious. They are extending their premises next year and will then also have a fully accessible wheelchair accessible hotel room as well. And a visit to Devizes’ charming market place, which is flat with few cobbles, is definitely worth the trip with several disabled parking places fairly near to the Peppermill’s front door.
